What was YR.1?
YR.1 - was a major photography competition that set out to find an image that best defined Britain at the beginning of the 21st Century. Bringing together professional and amateur photographers from all over the country, the YR 1 show included a huge range of pictures across various different media - from website galleries to national exhibitions, newspaper spreads to television programmes - in a quest to find out what photography means to us today.
YR. 1 was a high-profile photography event designed to create a portrait of Britain. It's the largest ever UK photography competition, bringing together the work of both professional and amateur photographers in a quest to find the defining image of Britain. Working across various media and initiatives (channel, website, exhibition and broadsheet), it was an enquiry into what photography is, and can be, in the digital age.
